The 1st Gargalhão Showcase presents 13 shows from Jan 16–25 at Teatro Commune in São Paulo, spotlighting comedy and theatrical masks.
From January 16 to 25, Teatro Commune in downtown São Paulo hosts the 1st Gargalhão Showcase of Comedy and Masks. The lineup totals 13 performances by 10 artists and companies, spanning classic and text-based comedy, physical comedy, improv, and a range of masks, from Commedia Dell’Arte traditions to clown and bouffon.
The showcase kicked off on January 10 with the Portuguese production “O Amor é Fodido,” featuring João Garcia Miguel (Portugal). This edition brings together Cia João Garcia Miguel, Cia Mugi, Coletivo Teatral Commune, Cia do Vale, Cia. Duo Dégua, Cia Teatro Rebolado, Cia Peixe Vagalume, Circo Herolino, Grupo Fora de Hora, Cia Metamorfose de Teatro, as well as artists Gabrielle Gabbe and Surya Marielle.
The project was selected by the 20th edition of São Paulo’s Municipal Theater Funding Program, through the Municipal Department of Culture and Creative Economy.
“This is not a simple festival, but a scenic hurricane. As heirs to the giullare and medieval storytellers, we believe laughter is the most powerful and dangerous weapon: it unmasks, exposes, and brings down the rotten pillars of power, and makes us reborn as a collective.”
Organizers also highlight the event as a moment for exchange among artists working with comedy and masks. For audiences, it is a chance to encounter less familiar stage languages, including Commedia Dell’Arte masks, among others.
