Gabriel Santana dies, comes back as a ghost and schemes to stop his wife’s new love — the hit comedy “O Marido da Minha Mulher” returns with a stellar cast.
A ghost with unfinished business
Ten years after its debut, “O Marido da Minha Mulher” (The Husband of My Wife) is back on stage with a brand-new production. The comedy features a powerhouse cast: Gabriel Santana, Rebecca Momo, Conrado Caputo, and Gustavo Mendes. The run opens on March 14 at Teatro Mooca, in São Paulo.
The story follows Alex, a self-absorbed and reckless man — a die-hard soccer fan who consistently chooses street parties over his family. After dying in an accident, he returns as a ghost with one obsessive goal: prevent his wife, Bruna, from marrying Nico, the man he despised most in life. His only ally is his best friend, Paulo.
Fresh takes on classic characters
Rebecca Momo sees her character as far more than meets the eye: “Bruna is the kind of woman who seems to put up with everything… but she’s actually playing chess while everyone else thinks it’s checkers. She keeps the marriage going, but makes her own choices. Deep down, she’s sharp, knows what she wants — and even when she seems angry or submissive, she’s always in control, just in her own way.”
Veteran actor Ton Prado, now in his fourth production of the play, is thrilled about the new team: “Incredible actors have been part of this cast before. But this production promises to be something very different from what audiences have seen. The cast brings a fresh energy to these characters — current, fun, and responsible. The audience has always loved this show; it was a guaranteed hit wherever we went.”
He adds: “For me, Bruna is the real thermometer of the play. Once the audience figures out who she is and the strategies she uses to keep herself sane — while three clowns compete for her — they root for her completely. The crowd goes wild with her turning point.”
On ghosts, intuition and imagination
The show’s supernatural twist sparks real conversations off stage too. Conrado Caputo is skeptical about traditional ghost stories, yet open-minded: “I don’t believe in ghosts the way fantasy tells us. But I do believe in paranormal experiences. I understand and respect the intuition many people have. I believe there is something beyond this life — a place for the soul to evolve and be free. I’ve never had a supernatural experience myself, but I’d love to.”
Gustavo Mendes, who is also a writer, takes a more philosophical stance: “Everything that is created, exists. I believe in the ghosts we create ourselves — and that goes beyond spirits. We create ghosts out of fears, out of ideas that hold us back. What I try to do is stop believing in the ghosts I create. I have a very creative mind and have imagined countless supernatural situations over the years.”
Direction and production
The production is directed by Carlinhos Machado and produced by Foco 3. Running 75 minutes, the show is rated for audiences 12 and older — making it a great night out for families and friend groups alike.
