Gianecchini and Casadevall bring “A Special Day” to Rio

After acclaimed seasons in São Paulo, “A Special Day” premieres at Teatro Claro Mais RJ on February 27, exploring love, acceptance, and prejudice. Following two hit seasons in São Paulo, the acclaimed play “A Special Day”, starring Reynaldo Gianecchini and Maria Casadevall, arrives in Rio de Janeiro for a limited run at the Teatro Claro Mais RJ, located in Shopping Cidade Copacabana, from February 27 to March 29, 2026. Directed by Alexandre Reinecke and translated by Célia Tolentino, the production adapts the 1977 Italian film by Ettore Scola, originally starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. The story had its Brazilian stage debut in 1986 with Glória Menezes and Tarcísio Meira. Set in Rome, May 6, 1938, the plot unfolds as Antonietta, a lonely housewife, meets Gabriele, a radio announcer fired for being gay. Amidst the fascist regime, they form a touching bond that challenges prejudice and social norms.

“It’s a story about encounters that transform us and remind us of love and empathy in times of intolerance,” says Reinecke.

Blending tenderness and intensity, the play reflects on acceptance, love, prejudice, and the role of women in society. Through an intimate narrative, it inspires audiences to rediscover empathy amidst the constraints of history.
