União de Maricá announced on Saturday, April 11, the addition of Mari Mola as the school’s new muse for Carnival 2027. The artist arrives to bring experience, charisma, and star power to a historic moment for the samba school — its first-ever appearance in Rio de Janeiro’s prestigious Special Group.

A samba story that began in childhood

Born and raised in the Tuiuti community in Rio’s North Zone, the 28-year-old Mari Mola entered the world of samba at age 7, joining her home school’s children’s section. By 13, she had become a passista — a featured samba dancer. At 18, she earned her first role as a muse, starting a twenty-year journey with her original school.

Over the years, Mari built a profile that stretched well beyond Rio. In 2017, she competed in the Musa do Caldeirão contest on TV Globo. Then in 2023, she reached the pinnacle of the Rio Carnival world, being crowned Rio Carnival Queen — one of the most coveted titles in Brazilian popular culture.

Taking samba around the world

As a samba instructor, Mari has shared Brazilian carnival culture across multiple states and internationally, with residencies in Germany and Sweden. In 2024, she closed a 20-year chapter with her home school, including five years as its muse. In 2026, she served as Rio Carnaval Ambassador and currently holds the muse title at Unidos de Padre Miguel.

“I’m very happy to be joining União de Maricá and to be part of this very special project. I’m sure Carnival 2027 will be grand, and I’m eager to join the team, contribute, and put on a great parade alongside the school.” — Mari Mola, new muse of União de Maricá

Mari Mola’s arrival strengthens União de Maricá‘s ambition to compete at the highest level of Rio Carnival. With an established name, international experience, and deep roots in samba culture, she brings exactly the kind of energy a school needs for a landmark debut on the Marquês de Sapucaí.
