Mawaca presents “Nama Pariret” on April 7 at Sesc Copacabana, celebrating women’s voices through Mediterranean, African and Brazilian traditions.
Selected by the Sesc RJ Pulsar Culture Program, this new performance invites the audience to experience female chants passed down through oral tradition in multiple languages and dialects. Directed by Magda Pucci, the show returns to Mawaca’s vocal origins as an a capella group, placing the human voice at the core of the stage.
Inspired by two symbolic ideas — nama (vital force in the Dogon worldview, Mali) and pariret (a term from the Ikolen-Gavião people meaning “beautiful”) — the performance weaves together Mediterranean, African, Asian, and Brazilian sounds. The result is a poetic reflection on women’s journeys through time, illuminating rarely heard repertoires.
On stage, six singers — Angélica Leutwiller, Cris Miguel, Magda Pucci, Rita Braga, Zuzu Leiva and Valéria Zeidan — create an intimate and powerful sonic landscape, often using frame drums to enrich the rhythm. The production highlights Mawaca’s signature blend of ethnomusicological research and creative interpretation of popular culture.
“We stripped away our usual instrumentation and focused on vocal gems that trace the paths of women across time,” says Magda Pucci.
