Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro’s 2026 season honors Mozart, celebrates Puccini, and features operas, ballets and concerts from March to December.
With Petrobras as Official Sponsor, the 2026 Season opens on March 13 with Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor, conducted by Felipe Prazeres, marking the composer’s 270th anniversary. The iconic stage will host six operas, four ballets, and three major concerts throughout the year.
“It’s a great honor to open this new season with our artists and audiences united again,” said Clara Paulino, president of the foundation. Artistic Director Eric Herrero emphasized the joy of “leading the fifth official season and strengthening the theater’s lyrical tradition.”
Highlights include Carmina Burana returning in April, the classic ballet La Fille Mal Gardée in May, and the Brazilian Music in Focus concert in June featuring works by Mignone, Gnattali, and Guerra-Peixe.
New premieres and grand returns
In July, as the theater celebrates its 117th anniversary, it revives Salvator Rosa by Carlos Gomes after 80 years. August follows with Don Quixote, staged by Jorge Teixeira under Tobias Volkmann’s baton.
September brings the Opera Workshop Festival, blending works from Monteverdi to Mascagni, reaffirming the Theatro’s commitment to fostering the next generation of opera creators. In October, choreographer Reginaldo Oliveira returns from Europe to present Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev.
The year concludes with Puccini’s centenary production of Turandot in November — directed by André Heller-Lopes — and the beloved Christmas classic The Nutcracker in December, performed by the Municipal’s Ballet, Chorus, and Symphony Orchestra.
Audiences are invited to attend free pre-performance lectures with sign language interpretation, as well as guided tours and educational workshops supported by Petrobras.
