Directed by Pedro Vasconcelos, with production direction by Marcelo Faria, “O Cravo e a Rosa – O Espetáculo” is back at the venue inside Rio’s Jockey Club Brasileiro after a successful run. Performances take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 7 p.m.

On stage, Paloma Bernardi and Marcelo Faria play Catarina and Petruchio, roles made famous on TV by Adriana Esteves and Eduardo Moscovis. The cast also features João Camargo (Batista), Catarina de Carvalho (Bianca), Rosana Dias (Mimosa), Marcello Gonçalves (Seu Calixto), Carlos Félix (Seu Etevaldo Praxedes, the bill collector) and John Garita (Seu Venceslau Torres).

From a TV favorite to the stage

Set in São Paulo in the late 1920s, the comedy follows a stormy relationship between Petruchio, a rough-edged farmer facing financial trouble, and Catarina, a wealthy, outspoken feminist nicknamed the “beast” for driving suitors away. As he tries to win her over for her dowry, sparks fly and the clash turns into an unexpected romance.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” the story brings period themes back into focus, including women’s suffrage and gender equality. The production leans on the contrast between rural life and the big city, using the couple’s conflict as the engine of its romantic comedy.

A TV phenomenon and the director’s take

Originally aired on TV Globo from 2000 to 2001, the telenovela became one of Brazil’s most frequently rerun titles, reaching new generations over two decades and airing in Portugal as well. According to the press material, one episode drew more than 50 million simultaneous viewers, and the show marked Walcyr Carrasco’s debut as an author at the network.

Pedro Vasconcelos says the stage version returns to the story’s central core, focusing on Petruchio, his farm, and Catarina’s family circle. For the director, the play heightens the narrative’s contrasts and highlights “love born from differences,” while keeping humor at the heart of the leads’ chemistry.
