Brazil’s beloved clown troupe turns 35 with a new show about babies. Two free seasons in São Paulo starting March 21.
What happens when a troupe of clowns dives headfirst into the wonderfully chaotic world of babies? The answer is “dito e feito” (“said and done”), the latest production by Parlapatões, one of Brazil’s most celebrated clown companies. The show runs for two consecutive free seasons in São Paulo as the group marks its 35th anniversary.
Clowns and babies: more alike than you think
The creative process began with something surprisingly simple: watching parents and their newborns. The group noticed a profound parallel. Both clowns and babies operate on the same core principles — curiosity, presence, play, and invention in the present moment. That discovery became the spine of the entire production.
The show relies on physical comedy and visual storytelling rather than verbal language, making it immediately accessible to audiences of all ages. The scenes — crawling discoveries, emotional outbursts, first attempts at coordination — land with instant recognition and real laughter.
Writing, music, and meaning
The script is by Hugo Possolo, one of the group’s founding members. Beyond the comedy, the text carries a quieter message for adult audiences: the importance of allowing children to explore freely and the role of play in early development. The soundtrack is by Wem, the musician behind the beloved Brazilian children’s project Tiquequê.
“It is a reflection of how we, as humans, begin to understand the world — with the goal of laughing at our basic incapacities and finding the beauty in our imperfections. We are preparing several events to celebrate Parlapatões’ 35th anniversary, and the season of ‘dito e feito’ is one of them.” — Hugo Possolo, playwright and Parlapatões co-founder
35 years of clowning in Brazil
Founded in 1991, Parlapatões have produced 71 shows and helped define contemporary clown theater in Brazil. Their acclaimed production “Os MequetrefE” and the “Circo Roda” — which reinvented circus language for eight consecutive years — stand among their most celebrated works. “dito e feito” is part of a broader series of events marking the group’s 35th anniversary.
The project was selected for the 21st edition of the Prêmio Zé Renato de Teatro, awarded by the São Paulo Municipal Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy. Special closed sessions for public school students will also take place on additional dates.
