At Galeria Caribé, “Suspension” presents 25 underwater photos by Pedro Arieta taken in Dahab, in the Middle East.
Based in New York, São Paulo-born photographer Pedro Arieta returns to his hometown for his first exhibition in Brazil, held at Galeria Caribé. Titled “Suspension”, the show celebrates photography and the artist’s long-standing bond with the sea. The project highlights a sensitive dive into the Middle East.
The exhibition brings together 25 underwater photographs of people and corals shot in Dahab, in the Middle East. The images were created at renowned dive sites such as Blue Hole, Canyon, Eel Garden, Light House and Moray Garden. Each location adds a distinct layer to this visual portrait of the relationship between body and water.
Photography and diving as a way of life
Passionate about photography since the age of 12, Pedro graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he has lived for 19 years. Throughout his career, he has combined professional photography with open-water diving. In Dahab, he also worked as a dive guide.
“Between 2024 and 2025 I was able to go to Dahab four times, spending around six months there in total. I produced a lot of work during this period, and the result is this exhibition. I am completely in love with this region. Since the first time I visited, in 2004, I have felt drawn to the city and the water like a magnet. There I developed deep relationships, friendships and connections that are now part of my life,” says Pedro.
Exploring the body’s dialogue with the sea
The project focuses on the relationship between humans and the sea, presenting the underwater experience in a non-conventional way. Rather than typical touristic views, the images seek a more intimate dimension. They highlight bodies in suspension, constantly interacting with the surrounding water.
“I have been diving and photographing in Dahab for 21 years, but my underwater photos started to attract more attention in 2018, when some images of people enjoying the water inspired me to keep exploring this universe,” the photographer explains. From then on, his visual research intensified. Diving became a natural extension of his artistic practice.
Curatorship and the atmosphere of “Suspension”
The exhibition is curated by photographer and cultural manager Iatã Cannabrava, who helped Pedro condense a vast body of work into a cohesive show. The images were captured on photographic film, reinforcing an organic and tactile aesthetic. The selection emphasizes the sensory experience of diving and living with the sea.
The photographs reveal a deep connection between body and water, in moments of pause, surrender and floating. “‘Suspension’ promises to transport the audience to the silent, ethereal atmosphere of Dahab’s depths. The images reveal not only the beauty of diving but also a state of stillness and surrender, captured with great finesse by Pedro,” says Iatã.
The exhibition opens on December 2 and runs until January 2 at Galeria Caribé, in São Paulo. The show invites visitors to experience, through images, the silences and depths that drive Pedro Arieta’s work. Admission follows the gallery’s own conditions.
