“Agora É Que São Elas” arrives at Teatro Nova Iguaçu Petrobras on March 21 and 22 with three of Brazil’s top comediennes.
A first for the Baixada Fluminense
The acclaimed Brazilian comedy “Agora É Que São Elas” — written and directed by Fábio Porchat — makes its debut in the Baixada Fluminense region with just two performances at Teatro Nova Iguaçu Petrobras: Saturday, March 21, at 8 PM, and Sunday, March 22, at 6 PM.
The show features Júlia Rabello, Maria Clara Gueiros, and Priscila Castello Branco — three standout names in Brazilian comedy — performing nine sketch-comedy episodes about everyday life, with live character switches and no costume changes.
Born in a drama school, shaped by Paulo Gustavo
Several of the sketches were originally written by Porchat during his time as a student at CAL (Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras) in Rio de Janeiro, where he first performed them alongside the late, beloved comedian Paulo Gustavo. “It was beautiful to revisit texts written 20 years ago that I created at school with my colleague Paulo Gustavo. And it was great to see this material is still current, works and is funny,” says the director.
Although written between 2004 and 2005, the sketches feel remarkably current. Porchat calls it “identification humor” — stories where audiences recognize themselves or someone they know.
Nine sketches, endless laughs
The show’s nine sketches cover a wide comic range. Highlights include Superstition (two old friends with opposite worldviews), Dumb Baby (anxious parents comparing their infant to smarter children), Wonder Woman (an exhausted superhero who refuses to help a robbery victim), and Angel (a bizarre angel of embarrassment who solves social gaffes through death). The remaining sketches — Selfie, Sasilva, The Talk, Optimist, and Sunday Sex — round out an evening of sharp, recognizable comedy.
Three generations, one stage
Maria Clara Gueiros began her career as a dancer and rose to TV fame on the long-running sketch show “Zorra Total” (TV Globo, 2004–2007). Júlia Rabello became a household name through the viral YouTube comedy group Porta dos Fundos and telenovelas on TV Globo. Priscila Castello Branco, from São Paulo, straddles dramatic theater and stand-up, currently touring with her solo show “Tô Quase Lá”.
A sold-out success story
The production debuted to a full house at the Festival de Curitiba in March 2024. It then ran for four months at Teatro dos 4 in Rio de Janeiro, with extra Wednesday sessions added due to demand, before selling out in Niterói and at the Teatro das Artes in São Paulo.
The show is unpretentious. There are three great comedians on stage; they dominate and are aware of their potential. A comedy text only works when performed by comedians who believe in it and know how to take it further. These women improve my text and the jokes, and I find that incredible. — Fábio Porchat, writer and director
Spontaneity as the secret weapon
Júlia Rabello points to timing as the key: “We put all our energy into keeping that timing razor-sharp.” Maria Clara Gueiros emphasizes the trio’s creative chemistry: “When one of us does something, the other two already get it and ride the same wave.” Priscila Castello Branco highlights the challenge of live character switches: “There’s no costume change — the new character is born right there, in the scene.”
