Play celebrates Ismael Silva with a season in Funarj theaters between November and December.
The play “Professor Samba – A Tribute to Ismael Silva” invites the audience to dive into the bohemian universe of Rio de Janeiro between the 1920s and 1950s. The production explores the rhythms and stories of Lapa and Estácio, telling the journey of Ismael Silva, a key figure in the creation of samba schools and Brazilian music.
Tour through Funarj theaters
The season takes place in three Funarj venues, giving the public the opportunity to enjoy the show across different areas of the city. At the Teatro Armando Gonzaga in Marechal Hermes, performances are scheduled for November 13, 14, 27 and 28. The Teatro Mário Lago in Vila Kennedy hosts the show on November 20, 21 and 22. Finally, the Imperator in Méier closes the season on December 10, 11 and 12.
This tour reinforces Funarj’s commitment to promoting Rio’s cultural scene and valuing samba as a living foundation of Brazil’s artistic and social production. Part of the Giro Cultural project, tickets cost R$5.00 (full) and R$2.50 (half-price).
Journey through the birthplace of samba
Written by Ana Velloso and directed by Édio Nunes, the play features actors Édio Nunes, Jorge Maya and Milton Filho. They embody the “Professor Samba” and portray other characters linked to the history of the genre. Thus, the performance highlights samba’s power as an expression of resistance and Black identity.
More than a tribute, “Professor Samba” is an immersion into one of the most creative periods of Brazilian music. Blending songs, storytelling and poetry, the play revisits the cradle of urban samba in Rio and reaffirms the genre’s role as a symbol of belonging and cultural legacy.
