Simões de Assis kicks off 2026 with “Duplo” by Julia Kater. Features 14 new works, six from her Paris residency. On view until March 7 in São Paulo.
Julia Kater Explores Landscape and Color
French-Brazilian artist Julia Kater probes the bond between landscape, color, and surface. She blends photography and collage through cuts and overlaps that forge fresh images.
Six pieces stem from her 2025 residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Collages build layers with subtle color shifts, suggesting light and time. Photos printed on hand-dyed silk expand this inquiry.
My research focuses on landscape and how color shapes the image—sometimes added to photography, sometimes rising from the surface itself.
The artist describes the pieces in “Duplo”. Highlights include Corpo de Pedra (Centauro), 2025, on plant-dyed silk, and the untitled díptico collage on Hahnemühle paper.
The Artist’s Background
Julia Kater (Paris, 1980) holds degrees in Photography from ESPM and Pedagogy from PUC-SP. Her videos stage unsteady gestures, with ruins disrupting the landscape.
Key shows: Breu (MON, 2018), Quase um (Simões de Assis, 2021), and events like PhotoEspaña and Frestas. Works in collections such as MAR and MON.
