In a popular vote by Veja Rio, Theatro Municipal won over 9,000 votes, earning the title of Best Performance Venue of 2025.
The Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro reaffirms its cultural prestige after being chosen as the city’s most beloved performance venue in Veja Rio’s Os Mais Amados do Rio awards. With over 9,000 votes and 15.8% of the total, the award highlights not only its rich artistic program but also the deep emotional connection between the theater and the people of Rio.
“I’m deeply honored to receive this award, as it validates the work developed at the Theatro in recent years. It’s a great team making this house welcoming for everyone,” said Clara Paulino, president of the Theatro Municipal Foundation.
Since its inauguration in 1909, the Theatro Municipal has stood as one of Brazil’s greatest cultural landmarks, offering opera, symphonic music, ballet, and drama to audiences. With a seating capacity of around 2,200, it remains a leading stage in Latin America.
Beyond its majestic architecture — inspired by the Paris Opera — the theater stands out for its ongoing productions. Since the 1930s, it has housed permanent ensembles: the Symphony Orchestra, Chorus, and Ballet Company, which maintain regular seasons and audience development programs.
The institution is also committed to cultural democratization, annually reserving between 10% and 20% of tickets for free distribution to schools, NGOs, and public institutions, expanding cultural access across communities.
At 116 years old, being named Rio’s most beloved venue goes far beyond symbolism — it acknowledges a living institution at the heart of Brazil’s cultural identity.
