Brazilian hit comedy about OCD, seen by over 1 million people, plays two nights at Teatro Nova Iguaçu Petrobras on March 28 and 29.
One of Brazil’s most celebrated theatrical productions, TOC TOC arrives at Teatro Nova Iguaçu Petrobras for just two performances: Saturday, March 28, at 8 PM, and Sunday, March 29, at 7 PM. Having drawn over 1 million audience members throughout its run, the show is a Brazilian adaptation of a work by French playwright Laurent Baffie, directed and adapted by Alexandre Reinecke.
Six patients, countless obsessions
The entire story unfolds in the waiting room of Dr. Stern’s office. Six patients — each living with a different form of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) — are forced to coexist while waiting for the chronically late doctor. Each character embodies a distinct and surprisingly relatable obsession, setting up a chain of both hilarious and deeply human moments.
The cast features Andrea Mattar as Branca, obsessed with cleanliness; Iara Jamra as Maria, haunted by the fear of having left something open at home; Sara Freitas as Lili, devoted to repetitive rituals; Miguel Menezzes as Bob, consumed by symmetry; Ricardo Tozzi as Vicente, unable to stop calculating; and Daniel Dantas as Fred, beset by uncontrollable vocal tics. Jade Mascarenhas rounds out the ensemble as the doctor’s assistant.
Comedy as a mirror for the human condition
Far from using OCD as a punchline, the play treats the disorder as a lens through which to explore empathy, tolerance, and the everyday friction of human relationships. The play has been staged in dozens of countries and adapted into a film — proof of its universal resonance across cultures.
TOC TOC is a comedy that goes beyond simple entertainment. It sheds light on a psychological disorder that affects thousands of people around the world in a fun and intelligent way, without being didactic. Perhaps that is why productions of this play have been so successful in countless countries, from West to East.
Alexandre Reinecke, director and adapter
By steering clear of caricature and condescension, the production turns a sensitive subject into a light, thought-provoking experience. Audiences leave having laughed — and having recognized a little bit of themselves in every character on stage.
