Alagoas dancers stomp rhythms from Toré and Coco traditions on Sesc Copacabana’s stage, clashing ancestral roots with 21st-century manhood in “Umbigo” – Jan 22 to Feb 1.
Directed by Carlos Alberto Barros and performed by Jal Oliveira and José Marcos Topete, the Companhia Ozinformais’ Umbigo pulses with percussive power, echoing cultural resistance.
Alagoas traditions meet bold dance
Drawing from Toré rituals and Afro-Brazilian Coco de Roda born in quilombos, the show reworks intricate footwork – the “trupé” – into contemporary choreography.
Barros notes how it celebrates these cultures while probing what it means to be a man today. Memory, defiance, and belonging weave through, bridging eras.
Its bodily poetics celebrates these cultural expressions while rubbing them against 21st-century manhood issues.
Circular patterns and earthy foot stomps drive the dance, transforming ancient know-how into fresh expression.
Ozinformais: Nearly two decades strong
