From November 14 to December 14, Sesc Santana presents “Vinte!”, a play honoring 1920s Black artistic movements in Brazil.
Sesc Santana, in São Paulo, will host the premiere of “Vinte!”, running from November 14 to December 14, 2025. The production offers a fictional reconstruction of the memory of Black artistic movements from the 1920s, drawing inspiration from the 1926 play Tudo Preto by the Companhia Negra de Revistas to build a poetic dialogue between art, time, and Afro-Brazilian identity.
Afro-contemporary memory and creation
Directed by Mauricio Lima, the play connects Rio de Janeiro’s artistic scene to international Black movements such as the Harlem Renaissance and revisits the legacy of the Companhia Negra de Revistas, which featured artists like Pixinguinha and De Chocolat. On stage, it blends spoken word, music, and dance, inspired by choro, jazz, and samba, encouraging new relationships between artists and audiences.
Cast and creative team
The cast includes Tainah Longras — creator and co-writer —, AfroFlor, Felipe Oládélè, and Muato, who also signs the musical direction. The creative team features Rômulo Galvão (movement), Júlia Vicente (art), Bem Medeiros (production), and Dadado de Freitas (lighting). Since 2018, Lima and Longras have conducted research on Black archives and performance, exploring the relationship between word, movement, and sound.
Research and recognition
“Vinte!” is part of Tainah Longras’ master’s research and marks a new creative phase for Mauricio Lima, winner of the Shell Award for Best Direction for Arqueologias do Futuro. The production was nominated for the 2025 Shell Award for Best Playwriting, reaffirming its place among the leading works of contemporary Black theater in Brazil.
