Descendants of Eliseu Visconti see for the first time the monumental Grand Curtain at Rio’s Theatro Municipal during a guided tour.
For the first time, Maria Clara Visconti Luz and her daughter Beatriz Visconti Luz admired up close the masterpiece “The Influence of the Arts on Civilization”, also known as the Grand Curtain. The painting, considered one of the world’s largest canvases, is among the greatest treasures of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.
The special guided visit, sponsored by Petrobras and organized by the theater’s Educational Department and Documentation Center, gathered dozens of visitors eager to explore the work’s history, creative process, and restoration details that revived Visconti’s 1908 vision.
“It’s the first time we’ve seen this Grand Curtain. It’s wonderful, moving, truly breathtaking,” said granddaughter Maria Clara.
The tour also revealed historic correspondence between Pereira Passos and Eliseu Visconti, shedding light on the context in which the work was commissioned and the artist’s lasting impact on Brazilian cultural heritage.
“Hearing the story while standing before the painting is a unique moment. Digital access can’t replace this emotion,” said Beatriz Visconti Luz.
The initiative is part of ongoing educational programs that bring audiences closer to the history, art, and restoration work of Rio’s most emblematic theater.
