Viva Mauricio: when accessibility shapes the experience

The immersive Mauricio de Sousa exhibit at CCBB Rio sets a new bar for cultural inclusion — and a free March talk goes behind the scenes.

A box-office and critical hit, the exhibition Viva Mauricio – Mauricio de Sousa, the immersive experience is earning recognition for another essential reason: its pioneering approach to cultural accessibility. On view at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil Rio de Janeiro (CCBB RJ) through April 13, 2026, the show treats inclusion not as an afterthought but as a core design principle.

Built-in inclusion

Every accessibility resource was developed alongside the exhibition’s curation and architecture. “Thinking about accessibility from the start means that inclusion is not an add-on, but part of the narrative, curation and architecture of the exhibition,” says Ana Lucia Peçanha da Motta, CEO of All Dub Estúdio, the cultural accessibility firm behind all the tools implemented in the show.

The exhibition features audio description in Portuguese, English and Spanish; Brazilian Sign Language (Libras); International Sign Language; subtitles; a sensory predictability guide; tactile maps; accessible signage; and 3D glasses with built-in accessibility. The experience also provides trained guides and a decompression space designed for neurodivergent visitors.

Everyone benefits

For Rafael Piccin, head of experiences at MSP Estúdios, accessible design has a universal payoff. “Accessibility benefits everyone. Tools like subtitles, sensory organization and clear language improve comprehension, comfort and engagement for any visitor,” he says.

Visitor independence is equally central. All solutions were developed so that people with disabilities can move through, interact with and choose how to access the content without relying on assistance. “Accessibility is only effective when it guarantees independence. Autonomy is a non-negotiable principle,” stresses Ana Lúcia of AllDub.

CCBB Rio’s legacy of access

“CCBB Rio was one of the first cultural spaces to think about accessibility. Alongside physical adaptations, we were pioneers in creating projects that gave protagonism to people with disabilities, such as ‘Assim Vivemos,’ and in offering accessibility resources in our exhibitions — mainly developed by our CCBB Educativo — since the early 2000s. Today, our standard is to have accessibility across all our programming, and we continue working daily on attitudinal accessibility with our teams, whose guiding principle is to welcome all audiences and their diverse needs,” says Sueli Voltarelli, General Manager of CCBB Rio de Janeiro.

Free talk in March

On March 17, from 3 to 5 p.m., the Espaço Conceito Banco do Brasil, on the ground floor of CCBB RJ, hosts the free talk “Accessibility at Large Events: Behind the Scenes, Challenges and Real Stories.” The program features a stand-up comedy set by Jeffinho Farias — a leading voice on accessibility with 17 years in comedy and a well-known presence on the TV show A Praça é Nossa —, alongside presentations by Ana Motta (All Dub Estúdio) and Leonardo Knittel, a consultant with expertise in accessibility for corporations, airports and major events, with stints at TV Globo and Chevron.

Free tickets are available exclusively through CCBB’s virtual box office (bb.com.br/cultura) starting at 9 a.m. on the day of the event. That same Tuesday, CCBB RJ opens to people with disabilities and their companions from 3 to 7 p.m. for a special exhibition visit, with no advance ticket required.

Full schedule at Espaço Conceito BB

The lecture series also includes, on March 14 (Saturday), from 3 to 5 p.m., a session with illustrators Flávio Teixeira and Mauro Souza from MSP Estúdios, followed by a hands-on illustration activity for up to 50 participants. On March 22 (Sunday), at the same time, architect and creative director Marcelo Jackow presents “How to Turn a Lemon into Limoeiro Neighborhood — from idea to the conception of Viva Mauricio.” Jackow is responsible for the exhibition’s scenic design and has led landmark shows such as Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum — 20 Years, Tim Burton and Batman 80 Years.

“Accessibility is not a cost — it’s value. It’s an ethical, social and cultural commitment.” — Ana Lucia Peçanha da Motta, CEO of All Dub Estúdio
