Yoshitaka Amano’s largest exhibition opens April 22 at CCBB Rio with 218 original works, immersive installation and free admission.
Yoshitaka Amano – Beyond Fantasy arrives at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil Rio de Janeiro on April 22, 2026, taking over every gallery on the institution’s second floor. The exhibition features 218 original works, including paintings, illustrations, previously unseen pieces and large-scale aluminum works.
Curated and conceived by Antonio Curti, the show offers a wide-ranging look at one of the most influential names in global pop culture. An immersive room built with digital technology expands the visit into a sensory experience.
The worlds of Yoshitaka Amano
The exhibition is organized into seven thematic sections: Tatsunoko, Final Fantasy, Candy Girl, Devaloka, Vampire Hunter D, Angel’s Egg and Collaborations. Together, they trace how Amano moved across anime, games, painting, editorial illustration and comics while keeping a distinct visual language.
Curator Antonio Curti says the exhibition is designed to engage both longtime followers and first-time visitors. In his view, the project deepens the understanding of Amano’s career while opening the door to a singular visual universe.
“For those who already know Amano, the exhibition deepens the understanding of his trajectory and reveals rare works, processes and nuances that few have had the opportunity to see up close. For those discovering him for the first time, it is a gateway into an absolutely singular visual universe, where every line, color and movement carries its own poetics. The idea is that everyone, fans or newcomers, finds here an experience that connects them to the sensitivity and extraordinary imagination of this artist.”
From Final Fantasy to Sandman
Amano began his career at Tatsunoko Production, joining the studio at age 15 and contributing to titles such as Speed Racer, Gatchaman and Tekkaman: The Space Knight. He later became a defining creative force behind Final Fantasy, shaping character design, visual identity and the franchise’s overall aesthetic spirit.
The exhibition also revisits the gothic atmosphere of Vampire Hunter D, the experimental phase of Angel’s Egg, the Candy Girl series and collaborations with Sandman, DC Comics, Magic: The Gathering and Vogue Italia. That range highlights the versatility of an artist who has crossed industries and formats without losing his signature style.
Sueli Voltarelli, general manager of CCBB Rio, says the exhibition also aims to broaden public understanding of games as a field of art, sport and culture. Fabricio Reis, commercial and products director at BB Asset, links the sponsorship to the company’s commitment to access, culture and knowledge.
Immersive installation
The immersive room was developed with AYA Studio using 13 works from the Devaloka series. The project turns the images into motion through digitization, cutting and layered composition while preserving the fluidity of Amano’s original linework.
Executive director Felipe Sztutman says the goal was not to impose animation on the works, but to reveal movements already latent in them, from expanding waves to breathing figures. That approach reinforces the meeting point between technology, mythology and fantasy at the center of Amano’s art.
