At the Theatro Municipal steps, “Letters to a Young Fat Woman” redefines the body as a space of ritual, healing, and political beauty.
This Wednesday (March 4), at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Zona Agbara presents “Letters to a Young Fat Woman”, a performance-installation offering free entry. The piece invites the audience into a collective ritual of affection and resistance, where performer-creators deliver letters written by fat, Black, and activist women, filled with words of care, confrontation, and radical love.
In duos, trios, and solos, bodies move as living manifestos, challenging aesthetic norms and reclaiming beauty as a plural, liberating experience. Inspired by Conceição Evaristo’s poem “I-Woman”, the work transforms the urban landscape into a place for listening and re-existence.
“When a fat woman dances, she reorders the space. Her body doesn’t ask permission — it founds a new way of existing,” says artistic director Gal Martins. The performance confronts institutionalized fatphobia while offering paths for healing and belonging.
Choreographer Suzana Araúja adds: “Each letter is also a mirror. They return humanity to those often reduced to numbers, jokes, or stereotypes.”
The letters were written by artists and participants of the 5th Fat Body on Stage Meeting, born from real experiences turned into gestures of care and survival. For Gal, “Letters to a Young Fat Woman” acts as a living archive and a ritual of radical love.
The project is part of “Poéticas da Flacidez – Second Rite”, supported by São Paulo’s 37th Dance Promotion Program.
