Brazilian NGO Favela Mundo delivers chocolates and throws festive parties for over 800 children in the Cidade de Deus and Caju communities this Easter 2026.
The celebration in Cidade de Deus took place on Wednesday (April 1). Next Monday (April 6), it will be the turn of children in the Caju neighborhood to welcome the Easter Bunny. The program features recreational activities, games, interaction moments, and chocolate distribution.
More than just chocolate
The Favela Mundo Easter initiative goes far beyond handing out sweets. Its goal is to revive the playful spirit of the holiday, spark children’s imagination, and strengthen community bonds through creative activities. The celebration is part of the NGO’s annual calendar and reinforces values such as solidarity, sharing, and joy.
“Easter is so much more than chocolate for these kids. It represents a moment of fantasy, discovery, and imagination. Playful elements stimulate creativity, the act of play itself, and the building of emotional memories that shape childhood. In this way, the playful dimension of Easter contributes to emotional, social, and creative development — showing that childhood should be a time of wonder, no matter where a child lives.” — Marcello Andriotti, co-founder of Favela Mundo
A community perspective
For residents of Caju, the NGO’s celebrations carry a deeper meaning. Leilane Lopes, mother of 12-year-old Camille, has attended the events with her family since Favela Mundo first arrived in the neighborhood.
“Ever since Favela Mundo came to Caju, I’ve been joining the parties with my family. They’re wonderful. It’s an initiative that brings activities to our neighborhood. Caju is only ever remembered as an area of warehouses and industrial sites. People forget that many families live here. When the children see the Easter Bunny, they light up and dive right into the fun.” — Leilane Lopes, Caju resident
The only UN-endorsed social inclusion model in Brazil
Founded in 2010, Favela Mundo is the only Brazilian organization endorsed by the United Nations as a “Model of Social Inclusion in Large Cities.” Over its history, the NGO has benefited more than 13,000 children and young people across Rio de Janeiro communities, promoting citizenship and social inclusion through culture. All activities are free of charge.
The initiative is sponsored by the City of Rio de Janeiro, the Municipal Secretariat of Culture, Rio Brasil Terminal, Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott Hotels, SmartFit, Operadora Pallas, Diverticidade, Hotel Fairmont, and Jataí, through the Municipal Cultural Incentive Law.
