Lucio Salvatore unveils intimate notes from 20 years of art at Museu do Amanhã, via book and doc that probe identity and defiance.
Italo-Brazilian artist Lucio Salvatore launched the book and mid-length documentary Anni Venti on April 13 at 4 PM at the Museu do Amanhã. The event had institutional support from the Italian Institute of Culture in Rio de Janeiro.
An intimate slice of creation
Anni Venti compiles texts, notes, and reflections penned by the artist over two decades of practice. Born amid creative processes and never meant for print, they grant raw access to thought in motion.
This project signals a turning point for Salvatore, who splits his life between Rio de Janeiro and Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, Italy. His work spread via shows and residencies, shunning polished narratives. Now, it invites open public exchange.
Key series and exhibitions
Standouts include Defeito de Identidade (2025), in Brasília and São Paulo, probing identity politics, migration, and displacement through paintings on belonging and exclusion.
Fluxo Gênico (2022), at Rio’s Museu do Meio Ambiente, resisted privatization efforts by ex-minister Ricardo Salles, aiding the birth of the new Jardim Botânico Museum.
- Campo (MNBA, 2021): Turned the museum into a Covid-19 testing field hospital for free community access.
- Artemide (2021), Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore (13th c.), Sant’Elia Fiumerapido: Cardboard mosaic echoing ancient frescoes.
- Metalementi (2017-2018), MAM Rio, curated by Fernando Cocchiarale: Links Combustões to Post-ar, Autoesquemas, and Black Square.
- Parque Lage, Palazzo Pamphilj, Rome: EAV Parque Lage’s lasting influence.
- Arte Capital (2016), Centro Cultural Correios and ArtRio: Debut of Price Fields, priced by tag sums.
- Fragmento (2015): Art Games and Post_ar, air boxes taxed by customs.
- The viewpoint of life after death (2010-2011), MuBE SP and Correios: Portraits in subjects’ own blood.
Not an external reconstruction of the artist’s path, but direct access to thought seeking form.
Born 1975 in Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, Salvatore studied economics and philosophy in Milan. He first hit Rio in 1999, detoured through New York photography, and honed at EAV Parque Lage. His art stems from foreignness as perpetual shift, challenging memory, territory, and fluid identities.
