Thursday’s edition of Bem Bahia, airing at 7:30 PM (BRT) on TVE Bahia, is entirely devoted to samba. The episode marks 110 years since the genre’s first recorded milestone: the song “Pelo Telefone”, laid down by Donga — born Ernesto Joaquim Maria dos Santos — in 1916, widely regarded as the first registered samba in history.
Roots, the Recôncavo, and women’s voices
The program brings together key figures of Bahia’s samba scene. Gal do Beco, Edil Pacheco, and Juliana Ribeiro discuss the rhythm’s deep roots in the state, its origins in the Recôncavo Baiano region, and the increasingly central role that women have played in shaping the genre.
Samba in Bahia carries the memory of the Recôncavo and the strength of the women who have always been at the forefront of the rhythm.
Samba at Bahia’s Carnival
The episode also explores how samba became a pillar of Bahia’s Carnival. Blocos — street carnival groups — such as Amor e Paixão, Alerta Geral, and Alvorada are spotlighted as symbols of this evolution, turning the avenues into massive, joyful samba circles that draw thousands of revelers every year.
The next generation takes the stage
The broadcast also looks ahead. Uel, regarded as one of the most promising voices of samba’s new generation, sits down for an interview. Taian Riachão, the creator behind the Suco de Bahia project, and the band Rara Raiz, residents of the Clube do Samba at Terreiro de Jesus, round out the episode’s lineup.
