With 190 samples from six states, Brazil launches the world’s first technical competition exclusively dedicated to grape juice.
Organized by the Brazilian Association of Enology (ABE), the event debuts with 69 companies participating from Minas Gerais, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo, reflecting the strength and diversity of Brazilian grape juice production.
Rio Grande do Sul leads with 145 samples, followed by Santa Catarina (13), Pernambuco (10), Paraná (10), São Paulo (9), and Minas Gerais (3). The wide geographic representation highlights the growth of viticulture beyond traditional regions.
“The participation from multiple regions shows that the industry recognizes the importance of a competition dedicated exclusively to grape juice,” said ABE president Mário Lucas Ieggli.
Tastings will be held blind on April 9, with judges evaluating visual appearance, aroma, flavor balance, and overall harmony. Products will receive scores from 0 to 100, earning Diamond, Platinum, or Grape Merit medals according to their performance. Results will be announced on April 10 at 5 p.m. in the Bento Gonçalves City Hall.
The contest covers five categories — Natural, Whole, Reconstituted, Sparkling, and Organic/Biodynamic — each with white, rosé, and red subcategories. It marks a milestone for Brazil, reinforcing grape juice as a healthy, natural, and alcohol-free alternative gaining ground among consumers.
