Chinese firm Anjun and tech giant Tencent joined Rocinha’s community association Sunday to donate coats and launch an international development partnership in Rio.
On Sunday, April 12, hundreds of boxes filled with winter coats were handed out to children in Rocinha, one of Rio de Janeiro’s most well-known communities. The initiative was organized by the Rocinha Residents’ Association alongside Chinese company Anjun and the Tencent Group — one of the world’s largest technology conglomerates — marking the beginning of an unprecedented international cooperation focused on social development.
More than winter clothes
With winter officially starting on June 21, the coat drive carried deep meaning for the community. João Bosco, president of the Residents’ Association, described the reality that motivated the action.
“When winter comes, it doesn’t come the same for everyone. For many children in our community, the cold arrives without protection, without the basics. There are mothers who share their own coats, children who face freezing nights in silence on their way to school, already used to being strong from an early age. But we believe this reality can be changed.” — João Bosco, president of the Rocinha Residents’ Association
Bosco added: “Every set of clothes delivered is more than a donation. It is a hug. It is protection. It is the relief in a mother’s heart and the smile of a child who feels cared for again.”
Rocinha as a gateway for Chinese investment
The coat donation in Rocinha was part of a larger strategic mission led by Anjun, which selected the community as its initial development territory in Brazil. The delegation includes 54 participants representing more than 30 companies across different sectors, forming a broad ecosystem of innovation and business.
Hub Nova Jornada handled the institutional coordination, bridging both sides and presenting investment opportunities across Rio de Janeiro state. According to the Hub, the initiative raises Rio’s profile on the international stage and underscores the state’s potential to attract investments that blend technology with social impact.
Rio de Janeiro on the global cooperation map
Choosing Rocinha as the starting point for this partnership was no coincidence. Social impact projects were highlighted as the entry point for international cooperation, showing that the interest extends well beyond conventional business. The combination of technology — backed by Tencent‘s global weight — and community development positions Rio de Janeiro as a strategic player in the global innovation agenda.
