Global Citizen, the international advocacy platform focused on eradicating extreme poverty and protecting the planet, brought together some of Brazil’s leading voices in culture, social impact, and public policy last night at the Fasano Hotel in Rio de Janeiro. The event marked the official announcement of the organization’s return to Brazil for the inaugural Rio Nature and Climate Week, scheduled for June.

Global Citizen co-founders Hugh Evans and Michael Sheldrick led the ceremony alongside Diego Scotti, the organization’s board director. Distinguished guests included Brazil’s Minister of Indigenous Peoples Sonia Guajajara, quilombola leader Vanuza do Abacatal, and Lucas Wosgrau Padilha, Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal Secretary of Culture.

Bridging civil society and government

The presence of federal government representatives, community leaders, and municipal managers underscored the importance of cross-sector dialogue in addressing climate and social challenges. Minister Sonia Guajajara emphasized the urgent need for integrated policies that recognize the role of traditional peoples in environmental conservation.

The evening concluded with an intimate pocket show by Bebel Gilberto, who moved attendees with performances of classics like “Adeus América” and “Desafinado,” celebrating the strength of Brazilian culture at a decisive moment for the global climate and development agenda.

Rio Nature and Climate Week in June

Rio Nature and Climate Week will be co-organized by Global Citizen, Re:wild, Rio de Janeiro City Hall, and the newly created Brazilian Institute of Nature and Climate. The initiative will bring together global leaders to establish concrete commitments aimed at expanding access to food security, energy, and education in the Amazon, Brazil, and worldwide. Further announcements will be released soon.
