A closing night worth eleven years

On Tuesday, March 31, the gallery and cultural center O Jardim, located in the Mooca neighborhood of São Paulo, hosted an exclusive sensory experience marking the close of the exhibition that celebrated eleven years in the career of visual artist and photographer Malu Mesquita.

The event brought together friends, family, and prominent names from São Paulo’s creative scene, including Anna Carolina Bassi, Caio Campos, Lilian Pacce, and Luciana Tranchesi. The evening was organized by Naty D’Elia and Camila Seguro, who had previously collaborated with the photographer on two exhibitions held in Miami.

Art, atmosphere, and presence in one evening

The concept centered on an immersive journey through Malu’s visual universe, weaving together contemporary photography, curated atmosphere, and human connection. The gallery’s setup and the selection of works guided guests through a path that reflected the artist’s sensitivity and distinctive authorial eye.

The sensory experience was further enriched by a buffet and an art direction that echoed the works on display, deepening the engagement of every person present.

“Closing the exhibition this way, surrounded by beloved people and inside a space that also carries my identity and journey, was extremely symbolic for me. It is a cycle that closes celebrating everything I have built over these 11 years.” — Malu Mesquita

A visual language shaped by memory and urban landscape

Over the course of her career, Malu has developed a signature visual language defined by the dialogue between memory, time, and urban landscape. Her work moves fluidly between analog and digital photography, drawing heavily on the aesthetic sensibility of the 1990s, and has established her as a leading voice among contemporary artists who explore photography as a narrative and emotional tool.

O Jardim: a cultural hub in São Paulo’s East Side

In 2024, Malu and curator Renato Negrão opened O Jardim in the Mooca neighborhood — a space dedicated to contemporary photography. It operates as an integrated cultural center, functioning simultaneously as an art gallery, library, analog darkroom, bibliographic publisher, school, and meeting point for debates and collaborative projects.

With a mission to host initiatives that cross themes, languages, and territories, O Jardim stands as one of the rare cultural hubs in São Paulo’s East Side, strengthening art circulation in the neighborhood where the artist was born. The space is open to the public and welcomes a new exhibition every six weeks.
