Scheduled for November 23, Rio’s LGBTI+ Parade brings millions to Copacabana; check tips to plan your trip and enjoy with safety and comfort.
The Rio de Janeiro LGBTI+ Parade takes place on November 23 along Copacabana Beach, promising to gather millions of people in a celebration of love, respect, and inclusion. For visitors from other cities, it’s also an opportunity to combine fun and tourism — with some planning.
Marco Lisboa, CEO and founder of 365 Fun Fest, a travel network for the LGBTQIA+ community, shares five essential tips for planning your itinerary and enjoying the event with comfort, freedom, and safety.
1. Book your accommodation early
“Hotels and guesthouses in Copacabana and nearby areas fill up quickly before the Parade. Book at least 20 days in advance and look for LGBTQIA+-friendly options,” advises Marco.
Neighborhoods like Ipanema and Leme are great alternatives nearby. For more affordable options, Botafogo, Flamengo, and Catete offer metro access and good prices.
2. Choose flexible travel options
If you’re coming from another city, look for tickets that allow rebooking. “Since it’s an outdoor event, weather can affect plans. Flexibility helps avoid stress,” explains Marco. He also recommends using the metro and licensed transfer services or ride apps to ensure safety.
3. Add culture and tourism to your trip
During Parade week, Rio hosts cultural fairs, themed parties, and exhibitions. Top spots include the Museum of Tomorrow, MAR (Rio Art Museum), and Sugarloaf Cable Car. “The Parade is the highlight, but the city offers an amazing cultural scene celebrating diversity,” says Marco.
4. Prioritize personal and digital safety
Carry only essentials: ID, card, and phone. “Use an anti-theft pouch and avoid keeping valuables in pockets. Digital safety matters too — enable location sharing, avoid posting your location in real time, and consider removing banking apps for the day,” Marco advises.
5. Stay hydrated and know your limits
Rio’s November heat can be intense. Drink plenty of water and take breaks. “It’s a celebration, not a marathon. Enjoy responsibly to make the most of the day,” concludes the 365 Fun Fest CEO.
