Raphaela Nascimento, president of Escola de Samba Tradição, received one of Rio’s most prestigious honors for women who shape culture and society.
On Monday afternoon (March 16), Raphaela Nascimento, president of the Escola de Samba Tradição, was awarded the Chiquinha Gonzaga Medal by the Rio de Janeiro City Council. The medal is one of the city’s most distinguished honors, celebrating women who stand out in their fields and make a meaningful impact on society.
The award was presented by City Councilman Márcio Ribeiro, who proposed the honor. Family members, friends, and members of the samba school gathered to witness the emotional ceremony.
A woman leading Rio’s samba tradition
Under Raphaela’s leadership, Tradição has strengthened its role in Rio’s carnival culture and grassroots community life. Her management is noted for its commitment to gender equality and the promotion of women in samba.
This is a historic day in my life. Receiving this honor represents the struggle of women for culture and society. I am proud to lead my school and to represent other women, because when one woman wins, others win with her.
Raphaela dedicated the award to her late father, Nésio Nascimento, founder and honorary president of Tradição, honoring his legacy while reaffirming her commitment to carry his work forward.
Institutional recognition
Raphaela is one of those women who positively impacts the lives of other women. Today, as president of one of our city’s traditional samba schools, she leads with competence and commitment to culture, equality, and the recognition of women’s role in society.
Those were the words of Councilman Márcio Ribeiro. The ceremony also featured a live samba performance by Tradição, bringing the energy and spirit of the community into the institutional setting.
