The first-ever Storytelling Festival comes to São Gonçalo on April 8–9, free of charge, with workshops, literary talks, and live music for children and families.
The city of São Gonçalo, in the greater Rio de Janeiro area, hosts its first festival dedicated entirely to oral literature and the imagination of young audiences. The 1st Festival de Contação de Histórias (Storytelling Festival) takes place on April 8 and 9, 2026, from 9 AM to 6 PM, at Clube Tamarilândia, in the Porto Novo neighborhood. Admission is free. The theme sets the mood from the start: “The Enchantments of Fairy Tales.”
The event goes well beyond entertainment. Its goal is to spark an interest in reading, stimulate creativity, and strengthen young people’s connection to both oral and written culture. Organizers expect around 400 participants over the two days, including children, teenagers, students, teachers, and families.
What’s on the Program
The two-day lineup offers a wide range of cultural and educational activities:
- Live storytelling sessions
- Recreational literary workshops
- Round-table discussions and talks
- Partnerships with public schools and social organizations
- Closing ceremony on April 9 with a live musical performance by Fred Tavares and a special poetry reading
“The Storytelling Festival was born from the desire to create a space where imagination is free and literature is celebrated. We believe that a well-told story has the power to transform the way a child sees the world.” — Danielle Bragança, general coordinator
“Producing this festival is fulfilling a collective dream. Every detail was crafted with care so that the audience feels as if they are inside a real fairy tale. Seeing enchanted, creative children is our greatest reward,” adds Yonara Costa, the event’s curator.
Culture as Social Transformation
The project is supported by the Instituto dos Sonhos. For founder and social activist Rafael Vieira, the initiative reinforces a commitment to social transformation through culture and education: “The Storytelling Festival plants seeds of imagination, empathy, and love of reading in new generations.”
The festival is produced with support from the Federal Government of Brazil, the Ministry of Culture, the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and the State Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy, through the Política Nacional Aldir Blanc.
