Chef Alice Isha turns weekday lunch into a full culinary experience at Sobrado da Cidade, a stunning 1865 mansion in downtown Rio de Janeiro.
Nestled on Rua do Rosário, steps away from the CCBB cultural center, Sobrado da Cidade is one of the most compelling addresses in Rio’s historic downtown. Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the restaurant serves a complete executive menu for R$ 84 — starter, main course, and dessert — turning a simple lunch break into something worth lingering over.
Brazilian flavors, contemporary touch
Chef Alice Isha leads the kitchen with a menu built on technique, emotional memory, and a deep respect for local Brazilian ingredients. Each dish feels personal and rooted, yet distinctly modern.
Highlights include a vegetarian risotto with organic Paris and Portobello mushrooms finished with soy sauce; panko-breaded monkfish bites with beetroot ketchup and potato chips; and a cheese risotto with slow-roasted flank steak. Also on the menu: pork tenderloin parmigiana with mashed potato and sweet potato, and a standout pork shoulder burger with octopus tentacle, served with fresh salad and homemade mayonnaise.
Where history meets gastronomy
The building itself is part of the experience. A 23-meter-high wall built with whale oil by enslaved hands, alongside original Dutch tiles, bears witness to the property’s layered past — once a warehouse, maritime company headquarters, hotel, and private residence.
That history now breathes through food, drinks, music, and conversation. Sobrado da Cidade has grown into a gastronomic and cultural hub, reaffirming Rio’s historic center as a living space for meaningful encounters.
