Brazilian Merlots gained international attention at the Mondial du Merlot 2026 in Switzerland, securing both a Gold and a Silver medal in one of the world’s most prestigious competitions dedicated to the grape variety.
The achievement signals Brazil’s growing strength in a category traditionally dominated by established wine regions, confirming the country’s ability to produce competitive, high-quality Merlot wines with distinct character.
Awards highlight national production
The Miolo Merlot Terroir DOVV 2018, from Miolo Wine Group, received the Gold medal, while the Aurora Reserva Merlot 2023, from Cooperativa Vinícola Aurora, was awarded Silver.
These results reflect not only individual excellence but also the broader evolution of Brazilian winemaking, with increasing attention to terroir expression and technical refinement.
Global stage and rigorous evaluation
Held on May 19 and 20 in Sierre, Switzerland, the competition gathered 417 samples from eight countries. A panel of 27 international experts conducted the evaluations, ensuring high technical standards.
Brazil’s participation was coordinated by ABE, which also joined the judging panel through director and winemaker Moisés Brandelli, reinforcing the country’s technical presence on the global stage.
Knowledge exchange and industry growth
Brandelli emphasized the event’s prestige and the opportunity it provides for professional exchange among winemakers, sommeliers, and specialized journalists from different countries.
“It is a highly prestigious international competition. The organization was impeccable, and the technical level of the judges was extremely high.”
According to him, the competition offers a deep look into the Merlot grape, allowing participants to understand different styles and quality levels worldwide.
Strengthening Brazil’s wine presence
ABE’s role in coordinating international participation has been key to increasing visibility for Brazilian wines. By facilitating entries and fostering global connections, the organization helps position Brazil among relevant wine-producing nations.
The awards earned in Sierre reinforce a steady trajectory of improvement and recognition, reflecting a maturing industry that continues to gain space in international markets.
