Lapa venue hosts Black women’s panel and samba shows celebrating Samba Day on December 2.
Carioca da Gema, a samba reference in Lapa for 25 years, celebrates Samba Day on December 2 with a program dedicated to honoring Afro-Brazilian culture and the women who keep this tradition alive. The evening will feature a discussion circle, themed performances, and surprise acts.
“Samba Day is one of our most important dates. It reaffirms our commitment to the culture that shaped both our house and the Lapa neighborhood. Honoring Black women on this day is to recognize the roots of this music, its strength, and the ancestry that keeps samba alive,” says Pedro Henrique Alvim.
Discussion highlights Black women’s voices
Starting at 7:30 p.m., the “Voice of the Black Woman” panel will be open to the public with free admission. The meeting brings together four women representing culture, art, and the history of the Black community in Rio. Singer Flávia Saolli, a regular performer at the venue, will moderate the talk, addressing female protagonism and representation in Brazilian music.
Guests include Dida Nascimento, owner of Dida Bar, who will discuss Afro-Brazilian cuisine as an expression of identity and cultural resistance; Rojane Fradique, a Bahia-born model who will talk about fashion and self-esteem as empowerment tools; and Carla Silva, a tour guide specializing in the Little Africa region, who will highlight the importance of cultural memory and heritage tourism.
Music and ancestry on stage
At 8:30 p.m., the group Três à Varejo will take the stage with a special tribute to samba. The setlist includes timeless classics celebrating the rhythm’s power and endurance through the decades.
Celebrating the past, present, and future of samba, the event invites the audience to experience a night of identity, ancestry, and music in one of Rio’s most traditional venues.
