In Rio’s Gávea neighborhood, Nãma marks four years blending fresh ingredients, creative sushi, and a laid-back vibe that draws crowds at lunch and dinner.
Four years of oriental cuisine in Gávea
Nãma restaurant celebrates its fourth anniversary in March 2026 as one of the most compelling addresses for oriental cuisine in Rio de Janeiro. Located at Rua dos Oitis, 6 — steps away from Shopping da Gávea, Praça Santos Dumont and the vibrant Baixo Gávea — the venue combines the quality of a restaurant with the easygoing energy of a neighborhood bar.
The house was founded by businesswoman Cláudia Jundi, who opened Nãma on March 9, 2022. Before that, the same address housed Sushimar Gávea, a pioneer in Japanese food delivery in Brazil — operating initially without tables, with just a counter, using packaging imported directly from Japan at a time when local suppliers barely existed.
From franchise to creative freedom
Cláudia and her husband took over the Sushimar franchise with family loans, running it under a strict contract for years. The pandemic opened a window for change. “I wanted to leave the franchise so I could do things my way — with the freedom to change, create and grow,” she explains. After formally notifying the franchisor, the restaurant was rebranded as Nãma in 2022.
The name comes from Japanese and means “fresh” — a direct reflection of the restaurant’s philosophy. Ingredient quality is non-negotiable. Guest chefs are invited periodically to develop new recipes, ensuring the menu stays surprising and dynamic for regulars and newcomers alike.
A designed space open to everyone
The restaurant’s interior was designed by architect Chicô Gouveia, blending oriental aesthetics with a contemporary Rio touch. The space accommodates up to 88 guests across indoor and outdoor areas. From Monday through Wednesday, capacity is set at 20 indoor and 46 outdoor seats; from Thursday onward, an additional 22 seats are added.
“The goal is to offer a pleasant experience whether you’re looking for an elaborate dinner or just want to meet friends for a drink. Nãma welcomes a very diverse crowd of all ages, reflecting the democratic atmosphere of the house. Everyone is very welcome here!” — Cláudia Jundi, founder of Nãma
