On April 23, Sobrado da Cidade honors St. George’s Day with a traditional Brazilian feijoada lunch inside a historic downtown Rio mansion, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A feast rooted in Rio’s cultural soul
St. George’s Day ranks among the most meaningful dates in Rio de Janeiro’s cultural calendar. Devotion, music, and communal meals define the celebration every April 23. In the city’s Historic Center, Sobrado da Cidade keeps that spirit alive by hosting a special feijoada lunch in honor of the warrior saint beloved by cariocas.
The venue occupies a striking 1865 mansion with blue doors and cobblestone streets of old Rio just outside. Over five years, it has grown into one of the neighborhood’s most iconic cultural and gastronomic hubs, where architecture, memory, and flavor coexist seamlessly.
Chef Alice Isha’s signature feijoada
The kitchen is led by chef Alice Isha, whose menu blends technique and emotional depth while championing Brazilian ingredients. The centerpiece of the St. George’s celebration is the “Bernardo Mendes da Costa” Traditional Feijoada, prepared with strict adherence to the roots of Brazilian cuisine.
The dish arrives with fresh white rice, bacon farofa, buttered collard greens, crispy pork rinds, and orange slices — a classic combination that wins over diners with its authenticity. It is available for one person (R$ 79.00) or two people (R$ 152.00), served from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A gathering place steeped in history
On St. George’s Day, the setting adds an extra layer of meaning. The date, deeply tied to popular faith and carioca culture, draws locals and visitors together around the table. At Sobrado da Cidade, the feijoada becomes a true gastronomic ritual — friends, families, and devotees sharing a meal inside walls that have witnessed more than 150 years of Rio’s history.
Good food, music, and a carefully preserved historic setting make this mansion the ideal stage for celebrating St. George’s Day in Rio.
The space accommodates up to 120 guests and is fully wheelchair accessible. It is located at Rua do Rosário, 34, Centro, steps away from the CCBB cultural center.
