Food poisoning in trips skyrocketed 48.6% in 2025, says Coris. Local cuisine boom draws travelers, but exotic dishes trigger diarrhea and vomiting, derailing vacations.
The hidden danger of must-try dishes
A Coris exclusive survey, leaders in travel insurance, shows a spike in claims from food that “didn’t sit well”. Issues cover food poisoning, stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting on domestic and international trips.
“Culinary tourism has boomed, which is great. But one bad meal can wreck your itinerary,” warns Claudia Brito, Coris Commercial and Marketing Director.
The body doesn’t always handle strong spices or unfamiliar ingredients well.
Destinations testing travelers’ stomachs
Spots like Mexico, Thailand, Peru, Portugal, and northern Brazil lure food lovers with bold flavors. Young travelers and families chase these experiences, yet gut shocks follow.
These hit pause on trips for 48 hours on average. Extra costs hit meds, hydration, doctor visits—even hospitalizations: up to USD 2,000 abroad, or €150-€400 in Europe.
Coris tips to eat safely abroad
Coris advises:
Watch street stalls and raw foods, especially seafood.
Boost hydration to fight fluid loss.
Go easy on hot peppers, fermented sauces, intense spices.
Skip extreme dishes early in the trip.
Choose light meals before long travel or outings.
Check if your policy covers food poisoning—often excluded. Coris provides quick care when included.
