In “Mangue,” Barbarize and Fred Zero4 transform their Recife roots into a powerful visual statement of resistance and identity.
The duo Barbarize releases the video for “Mangue,” from their debut album *MANIFEXTA*. Featuring Fred Zero4, founder of Mundo Livre S/A and one of the driving forces behind manguebeat, the work deepens the group’s connection to their birthplace, the Bode community, blending music, memory, and social criticism.
“This track is reverence, but it’s also a cry of today — denunciation and dance,” say Bárbara Vitória and YuriLumin. The duo comes from Recife’s Bode community, in the Pina neighborhood, where high-end buildings and areas lacking basic sanitation coexist, revealing the city’s stark inequalities.
The collaboration with Fred Zero4 emerged from mutual artistic respect. After Barbarize directed a video for Mundo Livre S/A, this joint track came naturally. Musically, “Mangue” blends trap, boombap, and raw guitar riffs, merging electronic and organic textures. The percussion by Maurício Badé and the flute add ritualistic layers to the soundscape.
The lyrics invoke the mangrove as a symbol of resilience and origin. Lines such as “Barbarize was born from the mud” affirm collective survival, while references to mangrove creatures like chié, crab, and aratu echo community solidarity. The song’s closing includes an excerpt from *Homens e Caranguejos* by Josué de Castro, grounding the music in social critique.
The video continues this narrative visually, employing Afro-surrealist and Afrofuturist aesthetics. Designed by Juliabe Balbino in collaboration with the duo, the setting portrays the mangrove as both living organism and political space.
