International collaboration arrives in Rio
The Norway-Brazil Connection brings together acclaimed musicians from Norway, the United States and Brazil. The group performs for the first time on November 26 at Blue Note Rio, in Copacabana, in a concert that blends jazz traditions from three continents.
The lineup features Norwegian artists Hans Mathisen (guitar) and Petter Wettre (saxophone), New York pianist Cliff Korman, and Brazilian musicians Augusto Mattoso (bass) and Kiko Freitas (drums). Their repertoire combines the lyricism of the European ECM sound, North American jazz and the unmistakable Brazilian groove.
Repertoire blends traditions and highlights soloists
The concert features compositions by Hans Mathisen and classics from the Brazilian and American songbooks. The result is a lyrical and rhythmic performance shaped by the expressive power of its five soloists.
Mathisen is one of Norway’s leading guitarists. He released eight solo albums and won the Norwegian Grammy in 2005. Wettre is known for his bold, groove-driven style and has collaborated with major jazz names, including Dave Liebman and George Garzone.
Cliff Korman studied with masters such as Ron Carter and Barry Harris and has performed with Milton Nascimento, Leny Andrade and Toninho Horta. Drummer Kiko Freitas has worked with João Bosco, Frank Gambale and Lee Ritenour. Bassist Augusto Mattoso is one of Brazil’s most in-demand musicians and has released five albums under his own name.
