A Brazilian director has been handpicked by the international team of Barry Manilow to write and direct the music video for “Sun Shine”, the lead single from his upcoming album What a Time, expected in June. The video dropped on Monday, March 23, marking the iconic artist’s return after a 15-year hiatus from releasing new material.

The director behind the project is Lais Sambugaro, a film director at Brazilian production company Modernista. Her connection with Manilow’s team began through Genero, a global platform that links creators worldwide through open creative competitions. Though she wasn’t selected the first time around, Manilow’s staff kept her on their radar — and the patience paid off.

“They reached out directly, inviting me to submit a script proposal. I was so happy to learn that my earlier idea had left a mark, and that this time everything aligned and the project came to life. I never imagined I’d be directing a Barry Manilow music video. I felt deeply honored to be chosen, especially considering his history, his legacy, and the fans who have followed his career. It’s been very special to see the power of an idea.” — Lais Sambugaro, film director

From concept to camera

As part of the selection process, Lais was given a choice of five unreleased tracks by Manilow to pick from, developing a full creative treatment — script, concept, and visual direction. The process kicked off in August 2025, with the green light arriving in September. Principal photography took place between October and November.

Since “Sun Shine” is a celebration of love, light, and the beauty found in everyday gestures, the video leans into that same warmth. Lais envisioned love as a ray of sunlight making its way through life. “I let the lyrics and the melody guide me toward a concept that could truly embody the essence of the song,” she explains.

Modernista also played a key role in ensuring the video would resonate with both longtime fans and younger audiences. Barry Manilow is beloved for timeless hits like “Mandy,” “Copacabana,” and “I Write the Songs,” which defined the soundtrack of the 1970s.

“I’m lucky to have Modernista in this process — an incredible production company giving full support to make this video the best it can be, alongside a talented crew behind the cameras. When an opportunity like this comes along, the most important thing is to have creative, competent people around you.” — Lais Sambugaro
