From March 3–7, Rio’s legendary Carioca da Gema fills its stage with female samba voices and toasts Áurea Martins with a signature cocktail for women.
A full week of women leading the stage
One of Rio de Janeiro’s most storied live music venues, Carioca da Gema is dedicating an entire week to the women of Brazilian samba. From March 3 through 7, the historic building in the Lapa neighborhood will host five consecutive nights featuring female singers who represent different generations and styles of the genre.
The lineup opens Tuesday, March 3, with Alana Valentte, followed by Vanessa Ebons (Wednesday, March 4), Dani Coimbra (Thursday, March 5), and Flavia Saolli (Friday, March 6). The closing night on Saturday, March 7, brings together Ana Costa and Nilze Carvalho — two artists whose history with Carioca da Gema stretches back to the venue’s very first nights.
Women at the heart of the venue since day one
Founded over 25 years ago, Carioca da Gema has had women shaping its identity from the start. Two women were part of the founding ownership trio, steering the artistic and cultural direction of the venue. Co-founders Marianna Penido and Carol Cesario Alvim continue to lead the space today.
“Carioca da Gema has always been a space where women had a voice and played a leading role, both on stage and behind the scenes. This week is a way of recognizing and celebrating these journeys that are fundamental to the history of samba and to the house itself.” — Marianna Penido, co-founder of Carioca da Gema
“Many women helped build what Carioca da Gema is today. Celebrating these artists is also celebrating our own history. Samba is resistance, memory, and continuity — and women have always been at the center of that movement.” — Carol Cesario Alvim, co-founder of Carioca da Gema
A tribute to Áurea Martins, a samba icon
Among the figures who shaped Rio’s samba scene, Áurea Martins holds a place of special reverence. Over decades, her career has been defined by expressive depth and an unwavering dedication to Brazilian popular music — qualities that inspired generations of musicians and helped cement her legacy as one of samba’s foundational female voices.
In her honor, Carioca da Gema has created a signature cocktail bearing her name: a blend of passion fruit, vodka, grenadine, and sparkling water. The drink will be offered as a complimentary gift to all women attending any of the week’s shows — a meaningful gesture underscoring the venue’s commitment to celebrating the women who keep samba alive.
