Carminho presents her new album in a special concert at Vivo Rio on November 23 during Festival Fado.
Portuguese singer Carminho prepares to reconnect with her Brazilian audience. On November 23, she performs a unique concert at Vivo Rio as part of the 15th edition of Festival Fado. Currently on a world tour, she showcases songs from her new album, “Eu vou morrer de amor ou resistir”, released by Sony Music.
The album highlights an increasingly authorial artist engaged with feminist themes. Carminho wrote eight of its 11 tracks, inspired by reflections on the role of women in fado and in society. She points out that, although the female figure has always been central to the genre, many parallel and ambiguous narratives coexist within it.
Repertoire and new sonorities
On stage, Carminho performs tracks such as “Balada do país que dói”, “Lá vai Lisboa”, “Pela minha voz” and “Saber”, which features Laurie Anderson in the album version. The repertoire also includes “Sabiá”, by Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque, recorded by Carminho in 2016, and “O Quarto”, from the soundtrack of “Poor Things”.
The show expands the textures of fado by blending traditional instruments like the Portuguese guitar and fado viola with electric guitar, Mellotron and Cristal Baschet. The singer draws inspiration from classic Portuguese guitar ensembles and voices such as Maria Teresa de Noronha, Beatriz da Conceição and Teresa Siqueira.
Female references and musical dialogues
The album is influenced by two women who reshaped modern music. Annette Peacock, a pioneer of electronic experimentation, crossed jazz and avant-garde rock with artistic freedom. Wendy Carlos, creator of the scores for “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining”, was one of the first artists to popularize synthesizers.
“These women played an admirable role by exploring new possibilities for female voices. Without them I would not have made this album.”
Carminho says that using Mellotron and Vocoder helps reveal different states of mind, different women and even different eras. She also reinforces her long-standing connection with Brazil, built through collaborations with Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, Milton Nascimento and Marcelo Camelo.
“Brazil is a second home, a place where I feel completely at ease. I relate deeply to the music here.”
She performs with André Dias (Portuguese guitar), Flávio Cardoso (fado viola), Tiago Maia (acoustic bass), Pedro Geraldes (electric guitar) and João Pimenta Gomes (Mellotron, Ondes Martenot and Cristal Baschet).
