Brazilian singer and songwriter Cesar Soares drops his new single “Não Deixa, Não!” (“Don’t Let Them”) on September 19, featuring actor Silvero Pereira. The track is part of his upcoming album Encanto and arrives as a personal gift to mark Cesar’s 35th birthday.

The celebration continues the next day: on September 20, Cesar performs at Estação das Artes in Fortaleza, in a show honoring his idol Ney Matogrosso.

More reality than fiction

The song follows a gender-nonconforming boy who faces relentless repression from family and society — and ultimately takes his own life. Cesar wrote it as a direct response to news stories about children who die by suicide after suffering bullying and homophobia.

“Every time I see news about children who take their own lives after suffering bullying and homophobia, I realize that unfortunately ‘Não Deixa, Não!’ is far more reality than fiction. I want people to rethink jokes, criticism, and censorship — especially in childhood — because those attitudes don’t just cause suffering. They can kill.” — Cesar Soares

The lyrics place the listener inside the voice of the oppressor: “Don’t let them see this boy and all that / The way he walks — he’s soft as milk, salt flower / Hide this child before trouble finds him / Or fix him with a broom handle / Don’t let him, don’t let him, don’t…” The uncomfortable perspective is intentional — forcing audiences to confront the casual cruelty behind everyday prejudice.

Caipira, samba chula and electronic sounds

Produced by Jr Tostoi, the track blends three distinct Brazilian musical traditions: música caipira (rural folk), samba chula (an Afro-Brazilian rhythm from Bahia), and contemporary electronic elements. The cheerful groove contrasted against the song’s tragic conclusion is a deliberate artistic choice — making the message land harder precisely because it catches listeners off guard.

How Silvero Pereira joined the track

The collaboration with Silvero Pereira — known for his acclaimed work in Brazilian theater and television — was born from a personal moment. After watching the actor’s monologue Pequeno Monstro (“Little Monster”), Cesar recognized a scene that resonated directly with the song’s core image.

“When I watched Silvero Pereira’s monologue Pequeno Monstro, one of the scenes reminded me so strongly of my song ‘Não Deixa, Não!’ that I knew I wanted him to sing it with me. Luckily, he said yes — and the result is incredible.” — Cesar Soares
