The Skank keyboardist joins Conexão Rio to reinterpret Roberto Carlos’ classics with new pop, reggae, and bossa nova arrangements.
Henrique Portugal, singer, composer, and founder of Skank, pays tribute to Brazil’s “king of music” in the show “As canções que não fiz para ela”, on March 7 at 10 p.m., at Manouche, located in the basement of Casa Camolese, Jardim Botânico (Rio de Janeiro).
The concert revisits Roberto Carlos’ career, from early hits like “É Proibido Fumar” to orchestral ballads such as “Café da Manhã” and “As Curvas da Estrada de Santos”. New arrangements blend pop, reggae, and bossa nova, led by the quartet Conexão Rio, featuring André Cechinel (piano), Fernando Barroso (bass), Fernando Clark (guitar), and Zé Mário (drums).
“While trying to understand love and its mysteries, I found in Roberto Carlos a storyteller of human emotions,” says Henrique Portugal.
With over two decades on the Brazilian jazz and MPB scene, Conexão Rio has released two albums — one with Raul Mascarenhas on João Bosco’s work and another with Vittor Santos dedicated to Chico Buarque. The night will also feature a special guest: saxophonist and flutist Zé Carlos Bigorna, one of Brazil’s leading instrumental musicians.
