Tributes to Jards Macalé and Luiz Melodia plus Alfredo Del-Penho’s samba-canção show take over Itaipava from Jan 15–17.
Itaipava’s summer calendar turns into a meeting point for Brazilian music this week, with three nights that bridge eras and aesthetics. From Jan 15–17, the lineup moves from boundary-pushing songwriting to jazz-rooted instrumentals and the deep lyricism of samba-canção.
Thu (15): a tribute to Macalé and Melodia
On Thursday (15), Duo Camaleão opens the program with “Ditos Malditos, mas sempre Benditos,” a tribute to Jards Macalé and Luiz Melodia. Both artists are revered for expanding the language of Brazilian song through bold choices and emotional intensity.
The performance revisits works shaped by urban poetry and genre-crossing instincts, highlighting overlaps between samba, blues and jazz. More than a set of covers, it creates space for attentive listening — and for remembering artists who challenged conventions in MPB.
Fri (16): Tom Jobim through instrumental reworks
Friday (16) brings Rodrigo de Jesus Trio with “Tom Jobim e outras bossas.” The group travels through bossa nova, samba jazz and contemporary jazz with arrangements that balance form and improvisation — a signature of Brazil’s instrumental tradition.
Alongside Tom Jobim, the repertoire includes songs by Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque and Milton Nascimento, plus international references like Wayne Shorter and Pat Metheny. The set draws a clear line between bossa nova harmony and modern jazz vocabulary while keeping its Brazilian pulse.
Sat (17): Alfredo Del-Penho and the soul of samba-canção
Closing the week on Saturday (17), singer, songwriter and researcher Alfredo Del-Penho presents “Por Causa de Você,” dedicated to samba-canção. The program maps the genre from early milestones like “Linda Flor (Ai, Ioiô)” to the classics that defined its dramatic storytelling.
With careful interpretation and a historian’s attention to context, Del-Penho revisits works connected to Dolores Duran, Dorival Caymmi and Lupicínio Rodrigues. The show highlights the genre’s bittersweet lyricism and narrative strength — a cornerstone of Brazil’s songbook.
Together, the three nights reinforce Itaipava as a place where Brazilian music is not just background, but an experience built on listening, memory and artistic continuity.
