Brazilian superstar Ivete Sangalo took the stage at Ginásio do Ibirapuera as the special guest of the Tabernacle Choir’s “Songs of Hope” tour opener in Brazil.
A historic night in São Paulo
On Friday (27), Ivete Sangalo — one of Brazil’s most celebrated performers — joined the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square for the opening night of their Brazilian tour, “Songs of Hope”, held at the iconic Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo. The collaboration brought together two musical worlds in a night the audience is unlikely to forget.
Echoes from 1981: Luar do Sertão returns
One of the evening’s most moving moments came with “Luar do Sertão”, a traditional Brazilian folk song that holds a special place in the choir’s history. The piece was first performed during the choir’s debut visit to Brazil in 1981. Hearing Ivete bring it back to life, backed by the full orchestra and choir, gave the performance a deeply nostalgic and cultural resonance.
Pop hits and a Jobim classic
Ivete also performed her beloved hits Eva and Quando a Chuva Passar, drawing an enthusiastic response from the crowd. She then closed out her set with “Águas de Março” — Tom Jobim’s bossa nova masterpiece — accompanied by the orchestra and choir, blending Brazilian musical heritage with the grandeur of one of the world’s most recognized choral ensembles.
Ivete Sangalo’s appearance at the “Songs of Hope” opener celebrated both Brazilian music and 45 years of the Tabernacle Choir’s connection with the country.
