Inside an 1865 mansion on Rua do Rosário, Sobrado da Cidade hosts live jazz on Saturday and a choro circle on Sunday, March 21 and 22.
Saturday: Jazz over lunch in a historic setting
Nestled among the cobblestone streets of Rio de Janeiro’s Historic Downtown, Sobrado da Cidade has earned its reputation as one of the most charming cultural venues for a weekend afternoon. On Saturday, March 21, the Jazz no Sobrado project turns lunchtime into a sophisticated yet relaxed musical experience, running from 1:30 to 4:30 PM.
The stage welcomes Guta Menezes, a versatile instrumentalist leading the set on harmonica and trumpet, joined by Vanessa Rodrigues (keyboards), Adrian Barbet (bass), Didac Tiago (percussion), and Roberto Rutigliano (drums). The repertoire spans jazz classics such as “Bluesette” by Toots Thielemans and “Footprints” by Wayne Shorter, alongside reinterpretations rooted in Brazilian and Latin American music.
Sobrado da Cidade brings together gastronomy, memory, and live music in a space that honors the many expressions of Brazilian instrumental music.
Sunday: A celebration of Choro’s living tradition
On Sunday, March 22, the mood shifts — but the spirit of musical celebration remains. The house hosts its beloved Roda de Chorinho, a traditional choro jam session that unfolds over lunch in a warm, informal atmosphere. The gathering pays tribute to the genre’s defining voices: Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Waldir Azevedo, and Chiquinha Gonzaga, reaffirming choro as one of Brazil’s most authentic musical expressions.
Food, history, and music under one roof
The musical programming pairs naturally with the culinary experience crafted by chef Alice Isha, whose menu highlights native Brazilian ingredients and recipes rich in identity and care. Served daily from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM, the food invites guests to linger in a setting that preserves the architecture and soul of old Rio.
Housed in an imposing 19th-century mansion, Sobrado da Cidade has grown into a genuine cultural landmark in Rio’s Historic Center, weaving together live music, great food, and a backdrop steeped in history.
