Jazz no Sobrado da Cidade launches its 5th season on January 10, nearing 200 shows with jazz, bossa nova and Brazilian music in Rio’s Historic Center.
Jazz no Sobrado da Cidade opens its fifth season on January 10 (Saturday), reaffirming its place among the most consistent live music projects in Rio de Janeiro’s Historic Center. With weekly programming and a steadily growing audience, the series is approaching its 200th presentation and continues to bring top musicians to one of downtown Rio’s most charming stages.
For the season opener, Sobrado da Cidade welcomes Ricardo Pontes (saxophone), Ciro Magnani (piano), Adrian Barbet (bass), Didac Tiago (percussion) and Roberto Rutigliano (drums). The set builds an elegant conversation between jazz and bossa nova, bridging tradition, improvisation and contemporary language.
Held weekly, Jazz no Sobrado has earned its reputation by blending jazz, Brazilian music and Latin American rhythms in intimate concerts. From 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, audiences experience performances where improvisation and onstage exchange are central to the afternoon.
Beyond the music, Sobrado da Cidade also offers a carefully crafted menu signed by chef Alice Isha. The result is an easygoing weekend plan that combines culture and good food in the same historic address.
Sunday’s Roda de Chorinho
The weekend continues on Sunday, January 11, with the traditional Roda de Chorinho, marking the start of the year with one of Brazil’s most emblematic genres. Born in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century, choro is known for sophistication, intricate melodies, refined counterpoint and wide creative freedom.
The performance turns lunch into a warm, welcoming experience, revisiting works by Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Waldir Azevedo and Chiquinha Gonzaga, among other masters of the style.
Historic house, cultural hub
Set inside a historic townhouse on Rua do Rosário, Sobrado da Cidade is known for bringing together quality music, culture and gastronomy in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The venue’s concept is to turn Saturday and Sunday lunches into a complete cultural outing, reinforcing downtown Rio as a key cultural hub.
