Composer and music educator João Marcondes releases on November 21 the album “Vertigo”, an original work written for Quarteto Topázio and divided into seven movements. The album marks his Opus 88 and becomes his seventh release in 2025, reinforcing his position as one of the most creative voices in contemporary Brazilian chamber music.

“Vertigo” emerges as a sensory experience built on the idea of movement and instability, creating a dialogue between sound and physical perception. The composition revolves around the sensation of vertigo, understood not only as dizziness but as a suspended state. The musical journey alternates between diatonic, modal and atonal languages, offering textures that challenge perception and encourage introspection.

According to Marcondes, the work provokes internal displacements. “After composing and recording, I realized I could no longer listen to the piece. It truly gives me vertigo. It shifts perception toward something fluid and complex, far beyond traditional emotions such as sadness, longing or love,” he explains.

Quarteto Topázio and the aesthetics of movement

Recorded at Estúdio Arsis with sound engineering by Adonias Júnior, the album is interpreted by Quarteto Topázio, formed by Marialbi Trisolio (cello), Leandro Dias (violin), Renato Yokota (violin) and André Rodrigues (viola). Conducting and artistic direction are by Marcondes himself.

The artistic partnership between the composer and the quartet is known for its technical precision and expressive depth. “Vertigo” expands this collaboration, exploring the limits of the string quartet and the perception of musical time, a central hallmark of Marcondes’ writing.

With a catalog of more than 700 works, João Marcondes has devoted his career to creation, research and education, contributing to the evolution of Brazilian chamber music. “Vertigo” stands as a piece of strong aesthetic density and technical rigor, reaffirming his pursuit of a language that blends tradition and contemporaneity.

Holding a master’s degree in Education, Art and Cultural History, he is the author of more than 70 books and creator of seven courses recognized by the Ministry of Education. He also mentors seven music creation groups that bring together around fifty young composers. His career includes lectures and workshops presented in 23 countries.
