This Sunday, November 30, Maurício Tizumba presents the “Caixeiros do Rosário” project in Uberlândia at CEU Campo Alegre, with a conversation, participation of Congado Guards, and a show. Admission is free.
The performance brings together Congado drummers from different Minas Gerais groups, highlighting the role of black Congado drummers and translating the tradition into an artistic environment.
The conversation starts at 2 PM, the Guards perform from 3 PM to 7 PM, and the main show begins at 7 PM. The project will tour six municipalities in Minas Gerais, starting in August in Divinópolis.
Tizumba emphasizes that the project aims to strengthen Bantu-Mineira music and culture. “These are black men playing Congado drums. I chose two to three drummers from each invited brotherhood,” he explains.
Besides the classic Reinado repertoire, the show includes original songs by Tizumba and other composers, blending tradition and innovation. “It’s a powerful Afro-Brazilian manifestation, different from pagode, samba, or axé,” he states.
Reinado, or Congado, is the most traditional Bantu expression in Minas Gerais, celebrating the retrieval of Our Lady of the Rosary by enslaved Black people. Projects like this combat prejudice and preserve Black history in the state.
Maurício Tizumba is an actor, singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and Congado captain, combining art, faith, and Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Mineira popular traditions in his work.
The project is sponsored by Cemig through the State Law of Incentive to Culture, reinforcing the company’s commitment to democratizing and valuing Minas Gerais’ culture.
