Brazilian funk star Naldo Benny opens up about the pressures his son PJ faces as he drops his debut trap album, “Alma Lavada.”
Growing up in the shadow of a celebrated artist is never easy — especially when the music world is watching. Brazilian pop and funk icon Naldo Benny is speaking candidly about the journey of his son PJ, who releases his album “Alma Lavada” on March 23.
The project is fully rooted in the trap universe and marks a defining new chapter for the young artist. It also features a deeply personal father-son collaboration on the track “Pai da Rua” (“Father of the Streets”), which draws from shared stories and lived experiences.
The weight of a famous last name
Naldo built one of the most recognizable careers in Brazilian music, scoring hits like Amor de Chocolate, Exagerado, and Chantilly. He acknowledges that this legacy naturally creates pressure for his son.
Thank God I have a lot of hits, and I think that does put a certain responsibility on him. Just the fact that he decided to make music is already a big deal, because comparisons will inevitably happen.
Still, Naldo believes their contrasting styles ease some of that tension. While he is known for upbeat, danceable tracks, PJ leans into trap and underground rap, with lyrics grounded in street experience.
To put it in perspective, Naldo draws a parallel with sports: “People expect our kids to follow the same path as their fathers. Like Ronaldo Fenômeno’s son — everyone expects him to be a footballer just like his dad. But that’s not always how it works.”
His story belongs to him
For Naldo, what matters most is that PJ builds his own path — without treating his father’s name as a shortcut.
The fact that he’s my son doesn’t mean the game is already won. He is very talented, writes great songs, and sings live without relying on auto-tune. But he has to do his own hustle. His story is his story.
Pai da Rua: a generational bridge
The father-son collaboration “Pai da Rua” is described by Naldo as a song rooted in shared truth. “It has our truth in it. It speaks about my history, what I’ve represented and what now inspires him. It’s a trap track that walks through my street life,” he explained.
The experience of making music together has been deeply meaningful for Naldo. “Sharing the stage and the studio with PJ is incredible. Seeing him make music brings me a joy I can’t even describe. Traveling these roads together like two friends, keeping art alive in our family.”
With an audiovisual aesthetic blending acoustic visuals and electronic elements, “Alma Lavada” introduces an artist shaped by his roots at home — but determined to carve out his own place in urban music.
